Chivalrous values that don't die

By Rula Samain - The Jordan Times

AMMAN - Circassian culture has a rich history of strictly followed traditions and customs shaped by tough times in the old days of the Caucasus, and although these traditions have softened with time, the Circassian community in Jordan still holds to the basics of their cultural identity.

Community leaders acknowledged change that emerged over more than a century of interaction with cultures of countries where Circassian migrants settled after fleeing persecution in 19th century Russia.

“The Circassian traditions and customs are somewhat tough due to the many wars the nation faced while living in the motherland,” said Adnan Mawloud Kalimat, president of the Circassian Tribal Council in Amman and mukhtar of the Circassian community in Jordan. No official figures are available on the number of Circassians in Jordan, but some estimates put the number at more than 100,000.

Adiga Khabza, or Circassian constitution, was very rigid. It evolved to ensure that strict discipline was maintained at all times to defend the country against the many invaders who coveted Circassian lands, according to the Caucasus Foundation website.

Nowadays, Kalimat added, time and the different places the Circassians settled in after they were expelled from the motherland altered most of the customs as well as the language.

But among the Circassian customs that cannot be ignored is obedience and high respect to parents and the elders.

“The young people have great respect for their elders and are taught to express their respect properly,” HRH Princess Sana Assem told The Jordan Times in a recent interview.

“The younger generations’ respect for their elders should be sincere,” she said.

Princess Sana, who is the daughter of Kalimat and wife of HRH Prince Asem Ben Nayef, has three children, Princess Salha, Princess Nejla and Prince Nayef.

The Caucasus Foundation website explains “respect” as total obedience to parents as well as the clan chief, and describes it as an “undisputable issue” regardless of the elders' education or rank, "even if they were wrong".

“The younger generation is not only taught respect for their elders but they witness it in their lives,” said Senator Khair Eldien Hakouz.

Explaining the Adiga style of life, the notable said in an interview at his residence in Amman that the son does not sit with his father in the presence of the grandfather.

Meanwhile, “the elder brother receives the same respect [from the younger siblings] as the father whenever the latter is not around”.

He added that the elder daughters enjoy high respect in their households, especially those who are about to get married.

“She would be respected and pampered by all her family members.”

“While with her parents,” the Princess said, “she has to learn to do everything that she will do in her husband’s house.”

She explained that girls gain much respect and in return they have to show respect to her parents and relatives gracefully.

“A girl is not supposed to be talking among elders until she is invited to.”

The Princess said that girls are always encouraged to study and have a profession, quoting an Adiga saying about the awareness of girls’ education: “There is no useless knowledge or profession.”

Kalimat said: “What we try to teach the young generation today is the spirit of love, respect and honesty in dealing with others.”

The Princess noted that respect for the elders is not unique in the Circassian community, which settled in Jordan where the Arab community cherished similar values. However, the Circassians, who arrived in the country in the last quarter of the 19th century, have a somewhat different approach to another social issue.

She noted that Circassian men associate with female members of the community at home and in society, but at the same time, girls have to mind dignity in any circumstance.

“She has to mind her manners not only around people, but also with her relatives.”

Agreeing, Hakouz said: “The atmosphere between the two sexes is harmonious.”

He explained that a Circassian young man may marry the girl provided they are in love, insisting that what is known as “khatifeh” in Arabic (elopement) is just the wrong term "in meaning and concept", given to a certain marriage tradition in the Circassian society.

“What is known as khatifeh is not at all the fair equivalent to ‘kwasa’ or ‘kaghaqasan’,” he said.

The girl's consent in marriage is essential in the Circassian traditions as well as in Islamic law, he added.

Explaining the process, the senator said that the woman and the husband-to-be would agree on a marriage date. Only one or two close friends or siblings would know about the arrangement. The girl’s mother should know as well and she will decide if the would-be husband's family is suitable or not.

“The groom's closest friend tells the father about his son’s plan to marry but won’t discuss dates.”

On the assigned day, the woman goes voluntarily with her chosen man to the house of a respected figure and will not officially become his wife until all parties know about the agreement and endorse it, including, of course, the woman's parents, Hakouz said.

“Kwasa occurs with the approval of the future bride and then her family,” he said.

Although aware of their ethnic and cultural identities, the Circassians look upon themselves as full members of Jordanian society.

“The Circassian and Jordanian history are one,” said Princess Sana. Kalimat considers his people the luckiest to have landed in Jordan, where they received the care and attention of the Hashemites and where they have been at full freedom to have their own institutions that preserve their culture, including the only school in the Middle East that teaches the Circassian language: Prince Hamzah High School in Amman.

Among other Circassian institutions in Jordan are the Tribal Council, the Circassian Charity Association, Al Ahli Club, the Folklore Committee, Al Jeel Al Jadeed Club and the Friends of the Circassians in the Caucasus.

Respect, discipline, love and loyalty are things the Circassians believe time will never change.

Management of Adygeya “Adyghe Khasa” plans to meet new Sochi mayor

NatPress

The social movement “Adyghe Khasa” of Adygeya is going to address to the appointed on October, 30th acting mayor of Sochi Djambulat Hatuov in occasion of the symbolics, organization and carrying out of the Winter Olympiad-2014. However the corresponding reference is not connected with the national identity of the new head of the town.

As the chairman of the public organization Arambiy Hapay said at the session of the executive committee on Thursday, the reference to the mayor would be not the only one. They also plan to meet, for example, with the management of the Olympic committee of Russian Federation, and the organizing committee on the Olympiad preparation. And the decision on it had been made far not now.

As to that Hatuov is an Adyg, in the opinion of the leader of the organization, that gives additional hopes for solving the question. “It is inadmissible, when the head of the Russian state in the days of struggle in Guatemala for our victory with Sochi, declares that earlier Greeks had lived here. Not only Russians, but also all the visitors of the Olympiad should know that Sochi is the land of Adygs, they should see what culture we have”.

And about the tragedy happened in the XIX century, people should know, considers A. Hapay. Moreover, the Olympiad will take place in the year of the 150th anniversary of the ending of the Russian-Caucasian war which outcome practically full deportation of the people became. “On the Red Glade on May, 21st, 1864 the imperial armies made a feast in occasion of their victory”, - he reminded.

For the inhabitants of the Black sea Shapsugia D. Hatuov’s appointment became a great unexpectedness, Sochi native, nowadays – a Maykop citizen, a member of the bureau of the branch of the Communist Party of Russian Federation of Adygeya Aydamir Tkhagushev told “Caucasian unit” correspondent. “Everyone whom I communicated with, is greatly puzzled: whether that to the best it or to the worst”, - he noted.

Tkhagushev told that from the outsider’ point of view the appointment is as if for Shapsugs’ good, as they are protecting their rights as the indigenous small people. “Probably, Krasnodar authorities trace the course of the litigations, - he explained. - And, probably, they have come to the conclusion that time has come to concede to Shapsugs’ requirements.

But, it is also possible, in his opinion, there is a game with return result when they supposed that it is more difficult to struggle with “their man”. Besides, the opponents got "trump": the representative of your people is at authority, and he speaks that it is all right.

The third variant named by the interlocutor, is that the appointment has no any underlying reasons, and Hatuov was transferred to Sochi as a man of business who should organize "break", having proved his professionalism in preparation for the Olympiad or "to burn down".

Let's note, as website YUGA.ru informs, Djambulat Hatuov, appointed on October, 30th, acting mayor of Sochi, has declared that he is going to start working immediately.

"For me Sochi is a very responsible work. The decision on my appointment is supported by the deputies, and I start working immediately", - Hatuov told journalists after the extraordinary session of Sochi town Assembly.

He added that first of all he plans to pay attention to the problems of the water supply system of the town. "In the near future I plan to have meetings with inhabitants of the resort zone. In my work I shall be guided by the principle of the public accountability and professionalism", - acting Sochi Mayor emphasized.

OSCE 'failed' in Georgia warnings

BBC News, 8 November 2008

Videos: BBC World News

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe has been accused of failing to warn that this summer's Russia-Georgia conflict was looming.

A former senior OSCE official, Ryan Grist, told the BBC he had warned of Georgia's military activity before its move into the South Ossetia region.

He said it was an "absolute failure" reports were not passed on by bosses.

But OSCE President Alexander Stubb said the risks were transmitted to member governments and the system worked well.

The conflict in the region began on 7 August when Georgia tried to retake its breakaway region of South Ossetia by force after a series of lower-level clashes with Russian-backed rebels.

Russia launched a counter-attack and the Georgian troops were ejected from both South Ossetia and Abkhazia, a second breakaway region, days later.

Russian forces remain in the two regions, and Moscow has backed their declarations of independence.

On Friday, thousands of anti-government activists demonstrated in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi - their first major protest since the conflict.

'Diplomatic means'

Mr Grist said: "The OSCE had been working in South Ossetia for many many years. We were the one institution that knew, had a feel for what was going on there at the mission level.

"There clearly wasn't the eye on the ball on the higher diplomatic level I would say. Because it was clear that something was brewing."

He said he had made it "very clear" at a briefing to ambassadors there was a "severe escalation".

"It would give the Russian Federation any excuse it needed in terms of trying to support its own troops," Mr Grist said.

But Mr Stubb said reports were sent to member governments, who then made their own assessments.

He added: "I myself got worrying information around the 7th of August that something, so to say, is cooking but that was going on all the time on both sides."

Mr Stubb said the OSCE only had "diplomatic means" but admitted those means had failed.

"That's why we had to act immediately when the war had started. Then we only had one aim and that was a ceasefire and I think we succeeded quite well in that."

The OSCE has had a mission in Georgia since 1992 and last month co-hosted talks with the EU and UN that ended without the two protagonists meeting.

Adamant

In Friday's protests in Tbilisi, opposition leader Kakha Kukava said: "We are starting a new wave of civil confrontation, and we will not give up until new elections are called."

Critics have accused President Mikhail Saakashvili of starting a war that Georgia could not win.

There were about 10,000 protesters at Friday's rally, according to estimates by reporters at the scene.

They crowded the steps outside parliament, holding banners and waving flags, calling for democratic reforms.

They were fewer than the 30,000 the opposition had hoped for, and fewer than at protests a year ago.

The president is adamant Georgia was provoked by Russia, and has called for an inquiry.

Documentary film: War 08.08.08. The Art of Betrayal

War 08.08.08. The Art of Betrayal

-------------------------------------------------------

Note to the readers:

The "War 08.08.08 - The Art of Betrayal" documentary is important because of its interesting and important scenes and was included in the previous newsletter without comment. After watching it all the way through, I would like to share my following thought, which I feel the need to state clearly. I wish we could see Russia (or at least the makers of this documentary) showing the same sensitivity and humanitarian feelings towards Chechenia, where Russia has committed enormous war crimes. Otherwise, their sincerity on these issues will always be open to suspicion.

------------------------------------------------------

“War 08.08.08. The Art of Betrayal” – is one of the first documentary Internet-films. This is the most outspoken film about the war, that started on the day of opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing, the film about the war, in which tens of Russian peacemaker perished as well as hundreds of peaceful Ossetians; it is the film about the war that turned out to be the doping drug for the rating of the republican candidate to the post of the President of the USA – John McCain.

The editorial staff of Russia.ru kept an eye on the progress of this war from the very beginning of Georgian invasion in Tskhinval. The camera crew of the TV-channel came into the destroyed republic on the 12th of August for the first time.

This trip resulted in more than 100 footages about the destroyed capital of the South Ossetia, about the burnt villages, dead civilians, about the families left without their houses, about the people, whose relatives are missing.

Russia.ru created a large base of experts, commentators and witnesses of the war crimes of the Georgian army. Finally it was decided to carry out a complete investigation of the events in the Caucasus, and the camera crew of Russia.ru headed by the writer Kirill Benediktov went the the South Ossetia again.

The stories, that were told to the journalists by the witnesses of these events and by prosecutor's office of the Republic, clearly showed that the film about genocide of the Ossetians just can not have any other name but “The Art of Betrayal”

The attack upon Tskhinval was preceded by a range of treacheries. OSCE and other international observers have just ignored the claim of the Ossetian part about the fact that the Georgian army is preparing the base area for the bombardment of Tskhinval and has already taken a strategically important high ground and for several weeks has been building entrenchments, blindages and fire trenches there.

Exactly from these entrenchments fire was delivered to the sleeping city by the Georgian peacemakers wearing the uniform of NATO – although they were the people whose duty was to keep peace within this region, but not to bring deaths. The traitors, the fifth column, turned out to be in the South Ossetia as well. And the most straightforward treachery was the speech of Mihail Saakashvili, who 4 hours before the attack upon Tskhinval calmed down the Ossetian people, persuading them that he doesn’t want to set the war off.

The film “War 08.08.08. The Art of Betrayal” is made up of 40 hours of the video-footage, brought from the South Ossetia by the camera crew, found on the YouTube Web site and other video- portals, sent by the Internet users, or taken from the video recordings of the cell-phones of the dead Georgian soldiers.

For the first time in the history the war has been recorded by the video-cameras of the cell-phones. These recording give the audience the chance to see the attack upon the South Ossetia in the way, the aggressors (who were destroying the houses of the Ossetian people with the cries of joy) saw it.

The uniqueness of these recordings is obvious: the journalists just are not able to film the very thick of the war, the faces of the murderers at the moment when the crime is being committed, the most straightforward and scary video of genocide. All this was recorded by the Georgian military men themselves.

The mission of this film was to show the truth about this war to the huge amount of viewers, to the millions of people in the whole world. It is the film about those people, who set off this massacre, about the fact who backs Mihail Saakashvili, and who received political dividends from the genocide of the Ossetian people and from the western informational chasing aimed at Russia.

In the nearest future the film will be translated into English, Chinese, Spanish, German and other languages and will be available for all the users of the World Wide Web. If someone of our audience wishes to take part in the distribution of this film, if you have the chance to help us, you can put the hyperlink to the film “War 08.08.08” in your blog or on your Internet-page.

It is so, because today any people, who are not indifferent to the tragedy of the South Ossetia, can become the participants of unmasking the lies of a range of Western mass media and of politicians, with whose connivance and assistance Georgia was able to attack the sleeping Tskhinval to frighten the whole world by the made up “Russian threat”.

It is so, because the war in the South Ossetia is not to vanish in history, is not to be forgotten and is not to become one the latest historical myths.

It is so, because all the world has to know what happened on the 8th of August, 2008.

New York Times report questions Georgia’s role in Ossetian war

The New York Times has published an article which questions Georgia's account of the conflict in South Ossetia in August this year. Based on the observations of OSCE monitors, it reports that Georgia was not acting defensively, but started the shelling of civilians in the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinval.

"The accounts suggest that Georgia's inexperienced military attacked the isolated separatist capital of Tskhinvali on August 7 with indiscriminate artillery and rocket fire, exposing civilians, Russian peacekeepers and unarmed monitors to harm," says the New York Times report.

This was a report rumoured to exist about two months ago by the German magazine Der Speigel. It was then officially denied by the OSCE and now apparently is being 'undenied'...

Journalists investigate

In late August and September 2008, the respected German weekly Der Spiegel published several articles which also cast doubt on the Georgian version of events in South Ossetia: "The Chronicle of a Caucasian Tragedy" and "The West Begins to Doubt Georgian Leader". These articles suggested Saakashvili's NATO ambitions were among the main reasons behind the attack.

Earlier this month, the BBC broadcast the first unrestricted Western report from South Ossetia. Its coverage suggested Georgia could have committed war crimes in the region.

Georgia - Crisis in the Caucasus - Journeyman Pictures

September 2008. As Russian tanks rolled into South Ossetia, the worlds eyes turned East. In the West the message was clear: Georgia falls victim to Russian aggression. But is our media telling us the whole story?

Quote:

''The truth is, Saakashvili would never have attacked either Abkhazia or South Ossetia without the go-ahead from Washington. That’s 100 per cent. They went in with US consent, that’s for sure. I know it, and we have lots of evidence to prove it. We have photos of the Upper Kodor Gorge where Americans taught Georgian troops demolition techniques. I have photos they took and abandoned there.'' Sergei Bagapsh, President of Republic of Abkhazia.

''As you see, we’re now at the UN base. It’s an observation post, of the United Nations Observer Mission. So, really, in violation of all agreements, the Georgian side brought these heavy-calibre howitzers here.'' Abkhazian officer.
